A Comparative Study on Behavior of RC Columns Strengthened by CFRP and Steel Jacket

This paper studies the behavior of axially loaded RC columns which are confined with carbon fiber reinforced polymers’ sheet (CFRP) and steel jackets (SJ). The study is based on twelve tested up to failure. It divided into three schemes its strengthening type; each scheme has four columns. main parameters in this were compressive strength concrete reinforcement ratio. Furthermore, results experimental test showed a substantial enhancement column's load-carrying capacity. When compared original columns, CFRP had significant effect improving ductility column by increasing axial deformation about 59.2 95.7%. On other hand, SJ contributed mostly capacity, increased capacity from 75 107%; because composite action comparing unidirectional lateral confinement provided. Both methods produced completely different failure modes. strengthened failed rupture occurring fibers. due buckling that occurred angles direct contact head column, crushing occurred.
